The door was open when I reached it and my heart surged with happiness. I parked my bike and called, “Farah?”

“Up here!” called Farah. “Come on in!”

Happily I climbed the stairs and as my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting inside, I spied Farah and Samantha mid-transaction, with a huge pile of things Sam was buying.

“Hey! Just picking up a few adorable things!” called Sam.

My stomach lurched. “Great,” I said unenthusiastically.

“Come on in! Have a look around! I’m having a small sale on girls’ cover-ups today,” said Farah.

I wasn’t sure how to get myself out of there without seeming like a freak, since I’d only just come in.

“Okay, cool,” I said, heading toward them.

“Right on this rack,” gestured Farah.

“Oooh, I saw the perfect one for you, Selena,” said Samantha, flipping hangers across the rack with a scrape, scrape, scrape. “Here!” She held the hanger aloft triumphantly like she’d just discovered gold or something.

It was a beautiful gauzy tunic, turquoise with little brightly colored flowers embroidered across a smocked chest, and tiny round mirrors sewn into the hem of it. Four small bells on the drawstrings at the neck made it jingle as Samantha waved it at me.

“Pretty!” I agreed, wondering how quickly I could leave. I took it from her and inspected it, just to be courteous. When Sam turned back to finish her purchase I snuck a look at the price tag. Even on sale it was $100!

“It’s super nice,” I said. “But . . . I didn’t bring my wallet today.” I gulped and put it back on the rack.

“No problem, sweetie,” said Farah. She was so busy counting the money she was making off Samantha that one more sale wouldn’t have made a big difference in her earnings for the day.

“I’ll get it for you! Here!” Samantha reached out and grabbed the hanger back off the rack and thrust the tunic on top of her pile. “Just add that on, too, Farah. Thanks!”

“Wait. No! Samantha, you can’t,” I protested.

Sam waved her hand at me airily. “Please.”

Farah reached to copy down the tunic’s price onto the sales slip but I grabbed the hanger from her. “No,” I said, and I put it back on the rack.

Farah looked at Samantha questioningly. It was clear who was the boss around here now.

Samantha said, “Come on, Selena! Just let me get it for you. What difference does it make?”

“It makes a difference to me. It’s too fancy. I wouldn’t wear it.” Even though it was totally beautiful and turquoise is probably my best color. But I’d rather die than accept Samantha’s charity like this, especially in front of Farah.

“Well, it might not be here if you change your mind. At that price, it will go fast,” said Farah. She bent her head back down to update the sales slip, and I hated her right then.

“I’m sure. I’ve got to go get ready for the game. Thanks anyway,” I forced myself to say.

“Let me know if you change your mind, okay?” said Samantha.
